Pride events are some of the most lively and colorful celebrations you could ever attend, which means if you’re planning to attend a pride festival, your makeup should match the festivities, rainbows and all.
Knowing the order of the colors of the rainbow — red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet, or ROYGBIV — is important for doing rainbow makeup. Of course there are no “rules” for makeup, but if you want the colors of your makeup to blend together in an effortless way, sticking to ROYGBIV will help with that.
NYX has an entire line of wonderful colors for both eyes and lips. The brand is definitely a go-to when it comes to quality products that are wallet-friendly. For the sake of saving a buck or two, all the products used in this how-to are NYX. Most of their collection can be found at ULTA and some NYX products are at Target and CVS.
What you need
The Vivid Brights Liners have every color of the rainbow, and a little in between. The applicator is a super fine point, which allows you to add intricate detail for any type of look. There are nine different colors (both green and purple come in two shades) at $7 each.
The Primal Colors Pressed Pigments Face Powder is the most pigmented eye shadow I have ever used and there is every color of the rainbow to play with! This product is only sold in singles, but at $5 a pop for some of the best looking eyelids, it’s perfect for a Bottle Bitch’s budget.
The color range for the Liquid Suede Cream Lipstick product was recently extended to now offer 24 options. They now have 24 options, including sky blue, purple and another orange shades, all for only $7 each. The only color missing is yellow, but the vivid liners and primal colors show up nicely on the lips too!
Get the look
The applicator on the Vivid Brights Liners has such a fine point that makes it super easy to apply subtle detail. Try dotting on the different colors on top of your bold cat eye, either randomly, or you can do the colors in order (red starting on the inner corner and ending in purple or visversa) This effortless look says that you’re queer and you’re proud, but you also maybe don’t want to put too much effort into the look.
You can also use the Vivid liners to literally just layer on the colors in a line. Doing this will leave you with an awesome, fun, fierce colorful cat eye all over your eyelid. I recommend using a primer for this, just like you would use one for eyeshadow, so that way your flicky look will last throughout all the festivities.
For the sake of our testing limits, I attempted to do rainbow lips. I used colored eyeshadow instead of an actual lip product so the colors would blend flawlessly into each other. It is easier to get the shadows to stick when they have a base, so begin by applying a lipstick (perferably nude and cheap — it’s going to get covered any way). Using a thin, angled liner brush will make the application easier and it will help define your lip shape. Then, just pack the shadow onto your pout.
PRO TIP 1: If you are prone to licking your lips or rubbing them together a lot, this may not be the best. The colors, while beautiful, will transfer onto eachother and make a mess. Also eating might be troublesome, because it’s not like you can easily re-apply and touch up quickly. But hey, I’m not saying it’s impossible!
PRO TIP 2: Please remember to exfoliate and moisturize your lips before hand. Rainbows are less beautiful when they are dry and peeling.
Whether you are going to add some quick color to your everyday look or an over-the-top full face of makeup, NYX will without a doubt have the budget-friendly products for you. And no matter how much detail you want to add to your look, remember to have fun and be yourself because that’s what pride is all about!
I would like to give recognition to the talented makeup artist Jeannette Montoya-Rivera, who helped me get ideas and achieve these beautiful looks. I could not have done it without her!
Thalia is a modern day Wednesday Addams: rarely smiling and dark clothes, but with great eyebrows, lipstick, and a love for One Direction. In her free time, she can be found inside avoiding the sun with a glass of Rosa Regale, probably either touching up her nose contour or adding more color to her hair to make herself resemble a peacock.
