Basic Bitch Diaries: Dieting Sucks

Curious what this is all about? Read the introduction to the Basic Bitch Diaries here!

Dieting sucks, and I’m not going to tell you otherwise. Here is (mostly) everything I ate this week for my Very Basic New Year’s Resolution:

Day One

Breakfast: Steel cut oats, sweetened with a bit of Stevia and topped with sliced almonds. Not bad!

Lunch: I was absolutely starving after I got home from grocery shopping for the week, so I threw in one of these Amy’s pizzas just to have something fast. Probably not the healthiest option, but damn was it good.

Afternoon snack: Peppermint Hershey’s kisses. I had them left over from Christmas, don’t judge.

Dinner: A “Smart Pocket” pita filled with lightened up tuna salad (made with Greek yogurt instead of mayo). This was pretty bland and if I make it again it needs *something* to make it taste more like real food.

Dessert: Okay, this probably shouldn’t be allowed, but my roommate made these amazing vegan, brown rice krispy treats and I couldn’t say no. THEY ARE SO GOOD! My dinner was not filling enough so this did the trick for me.

Level of sadness: 6. This was the first day and even though I had a decent amount of sugar, I was still craving more food and thinking about all the deliciousness I wold miss out on in this “lifestyle change.”

Day Two

Breakfast: Wallaby lowfat Greek yogurt (in terms of Greek yogurt, these are some of my favorites). I can’t remember if I had coffee, but I had earl grey tea before lunch.

Lunch: I meal-prepped this slow cooker southwestern chicken chili. Not bad!

Snacks: I had this strange soft oatmeal/granola bar with chocolate that tasted like fake sugar and lost dreams. I ate an apple out of desperation later on.

Dinner: We went to the healthiest place we know called Dig Inn, which has really wholesome home-style food. I had roasted chicken, sweet potatoes and brussel sprouts on a bed of greens.

Misery level: 5. I was pretty hungry after lunch, and sad that I had no calories left after dinner, but it was delicious so I can’t complain too much.

Day Three

Breakfast: More Greek yogurt and coffee. I get bored of what I eat for lunch and dinner all the time, but I don’t mind eating the same yogurt every morning. I ate a banana before lunch.

Lunch: Same as the day before.

Snack: Peppermint kisses because I wanted chocolate BAD (don’t let the photo deceive you – I actually ate four).

Dinner: I ordered in Seamless at a friend’s house and shared these weird mini sushi burrito rolls? They were alright, but I definitely prefer regular ol’ sushi. I also had some miso soup and a tiny bit of cheese from party leftovers.

Sadness level: 6, because my friend started eating her Ben & Jerry’s in front of me *cries*

Day Four

Breakfast: Greek yogurt and coffee (snooze).

Lunch: I caved and got a kale caesar salad with chicken from Chop’t and IT WAS GREAT. I’ve never been so happy about a salad in my life.

Snack: Another weird oatmeal bar. The salad kept me pretty full so I wasn’t craving anything else.

Dinner: I made half a salmon steak and sauteed some baby bella mushrooms – both were A+, would make again.

Dessert: GOD BLESS HALO TOP and the kitchen goddesses who gave this to me. It is so. good.

Diet loathing: 3.5. It helped that I ended my day with ice cream and ate out for lunch.

Day Five

Breakfast: Yogurt. Coffee. Emails. Mmmmm.

Lunch: The second half of last night’s dinner. It doesn’t look appetizing but I swear it was good.

Snacks: I made some roasted chickpeas and was pretty happy with how they turned out! They are a perfect crunchy and salty snack…unlike the kisses, which were delicious but still chocolate.

Dinner: I have to say that this dinner was the shining diet jewel of the week. I made this BOMB buffalo chicken and sweet potato recipe for my boyfriend and I, and we ate a side salad with balsamic dressing.

Sadness level: 2! I could barely be sad after that dinner – must make again.

Day Six

Breakfast: I met up with some friends at Think Coffee and ordered a Spanish latte and their oatmeal with steamed milk, which, despite tasting weird, kept me full for pretty much the rest of the snowy as hell day.

Lunch: We had a late lunch of hot pot, which was DELICIOUS, though maybe not too diet friendly. Luckily everything at hot pot is in small portions, so the amount you eat is entirely up to you.

Dinner/Dessert: I was craving hot chocolate like none other and PMSing pretty bad, so I ordered some Nutella hot chocolate. Yeah, I know. I ordered a salad for the next day to meet my order minimum, and ended up eating the bread that came with it (oops).

Ugh meter: ¯\_(ツ)_/¯, for not being better about my diet but also for getting to eat some fattier, sweeter foods for once.

Day Seven

…was a wash. I attended a party and snacked on appetizers pretty much all day and decided to just call it a “cheat day.”

Overall Thoughts

Dieting sucks, especially when you’ve been used to eating pretty much whatever you want, whenever you want from before your pre-diet days. I found myself getting really hungry between lunch and dinner, and there were more than enough moments of wishing I could eat pizza, an entire bowl of pasta, or buy a cupcake and not feel guilty about it. That being said, I feel myself getting less of that hungry/snacky feeling now that I’m a week in, and balancing calories throughout the day has been easier.

I have yet to incorporate exercise into my plan, BUT I will be signing up for my 5k before the end of the month, so that has to happen ASAP.

Total pounds lost: 4!

How I feel about my New Year’s Resolution: Compared to how I was eating before, I am definitely doing better in terms of what I’m eating and portion control. Losing 4 pounds – even if it’s just water weight/In-n-Out Burger weight is definitely motivation to keep going, and motivation to get off my lazy ass and actually start exercising.
